In 1986, Évora was considered world heritage by UNESCO due to its number of attractions and roots that date from Roman times. The city became so rich also due to the king’s heritage that lived in the city during the 16th century. Évora is located in the heart of Alentejo, between Lisbon and Spain. This city gives you one hundred reasons to visit it, since the beauty of the city, history, monuments, museums, landscapes, food, and of course, wines.

Évora is located in the center of Alentejo’s wine route. Alentejo’s wine route is one of the wine routes of Portugal. Here, tourists can make activities such as wine tourism and winemaking, learn about the regional culture, and live the true Alentejo spirit. The wine route includes around 260 wineries, such as Quinta da Cartuxa, Esporão, Ervideira, but, the region also includes buildings, monuments, local crafts, cultural and tourist events, and very typical gastronomy.

Alentejo is known for its heavy and typical gastronomy that combines really well with full-bodied wines, intended flavored, whether they are white or red. In fact, Alentejo’s counts with two distinct styles of red wines (the most popular wine in the region).

  • Less traditional wines: often combine earthy, herby flamors and aromas with a touch of fruit.
  • Traditional Alentejo wines; Full-bodied, higly complex wines that are reasonably age-worthy(at least 3-5 years for the red wines).

The region has also been growing a lot when it comes to some liqueurs. One that can only be found there is “Licor de Poejo”, which tastes like mint, very fresh and unique. Another unique fact to this region is that there is a small producer called Courelas da Torre that only focuses on organic wines that you must try if your pass by the area.

Long story short, there is absolutely no excuse to not visit Évora, mainly for its wine potential and uniqueness, but also for the whole bundle of benefits that the regional attractions bring to any tourist.
